This course focuses on what all those buttons on your new camera actually do! Learn about basic photography settings and skills and become more confident in operating a DSLR camera. Students will need their own DSLR or mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. (No point and shoot cameras)

Students will receive significant one-on-one instructor feedback in this workshop-style course.

This course serves as a “preview” of Aims’ main campus Digital Photography I/II course.

Topical Outline – These topics will be covered in class, but not necessarily in this order, and not
necessarily restricted to only these topics covered:
– Shutter speed, ISO, Aperture
– Mirrorless vs DSLR cameras
– What accessories can my camera accept?
– How do I use my camera in manual modes?
– Understanding light, its qualities, and its impacts on camera settings
– Balancing gear value vs cost
– How to search for and purchase pre-owned camera equipment
– How can we become better at technical elements of photography.

Interchangeable lens camera required, so you can receive the most out of this course – DSLR or Mirrorless variations OK. Storage media for camera, photos required.

Computers with Lightroom provided by Aims lab, home laptop/computer to bring fine as well.
