Introduction to Jewelry and Metalwork

Explore metalsmithing techniques to design your own jewelry and small-scale sculptural objects. This semester-long class introduces fabrication and forming techniques such as soldering, forming, hollow construction, cold connections, surface treatment, finishing processes, and basic stone setting using semiprecious and precious metals.

This class places an emphasis on craftsmanship, traditional metalsmithing, and casting methods. Students will also learn to critically discuss their projects as well as that of their fellow students. Students will be introduced to the correct use of various metalworking tools such as, but not limited to: jeweler’s saws, files, abrasive media (sand paper), drill presses, burnishers, flex shaft tools, rolling mills, hammers, stamps, and soldering torches.

This class is being offered to both credit and non-credit students. All students will follow the same curriculum and complete the same projects. Attendance is essential not only to the learning environment but for the community of the classroom experience for all students.

This course follows the syllabus for ART 1604: Jewelry and Metalwork I

Additional supply costs may be incurred. A complete list of required materials will be provided in class.
